Local Attractions

The Village of Saugerties has so much to do and see. B&B Tamayo is nestled in the heart of the Saugerties Village and has become part of the the rich history of Saugerties.

The Village of Saugerties located between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains was incorporated on April 26, 1831 as “Ulster”. Its name was changed on April 10, 1855. By 1872 it contained seven churches, three banks, a newspaper office, several large manufactories, and about 4,000 inhabitants. The village was provided with hotels and stores of various kinds. (From History of Saugerties NY: Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1872).

In 1864 the Zeigler Brothers built a restaurant and businessmen’s hotel in the Village. In 1987 Saugerties Village became the first commercial district in the United States to be listed on the National Historic Register. That is also the year that Cafe Tamayo opened in the old Zeigler building, with a restaurant downstairs and just a few years later, the Saugerties Bed and Breakfast at B&B Tamayo upstairs. The back bar is still in place where it was built in 1864, as are the original paddle fans, which were water powered before electricity was added to the building in 1911. Downstairs in the building (where the store Dig is now located) there are 3 original plaster on canvas ceilings, and upstairs in some of the B&B rooms are original plaster moldings and examples of cake decoration plaster.

After 25 years of happily dedicating our time to Cafe Tamayo we decided it was time to slow down a bit, so now we enjoy running Saugerties Bed and Breakfast at B&B Tamayo, hosting special dinners and cooking classes in the Dining Room at Saugerties Bed and Breakfast at B&B Tamayo. We welcome you and hope you enjoy your stay with us and come back soon!
